It turns out people have researched how to do algorithmic recommendations without users having to reveal their personal preferences, and I am intrigued. Apparently, in principle we could have the good parts of, say, Netflix suggesting more things you might want to watch, without exposing ourselves to entities like Facebook selling all our data.

See "Distributed Differential Privacy and Applications" by Narayan, for example. (Also that's the first CC-BY licensed PhD thesis I've seen!)

These days I'm always on the lookout for ways to shed all the complexity that I've added to my life over the years. Delete extraneous apps popping up constant notifications, discard and donate unnecessary things cluttering my space, cut down on the noise.

Watching Facebook run around in the news is probably my new favorite hobby.

Wait, quick question, are all vegetables super foods!?

Set up a dev environment this afternoon on .

Doing almost anything on Arch is doing it the hard way but it's so rewarding and you learn so much. My knowledge of has probably tripled or more since I installed Arch.

In a fully cooperative economy, how would one invest for the future?

Right now I invest in a total stock market fund since I don’t want to work forever, but the more I learn about the issues with absentee owners and the benefits of worker co-ops, the more I realize that in doing so I am being part of the problem.

Is there a more ethical way to get good returns on otherwise non-utilized money?

Getting back into web design/development for fun and profit. Looking into Wordpress and Shopify to start, I am very comfortable with Python and ok with JS, any CMS/Frameworks/etc, I should be considering from a freelance perspective?

Really, asking "what should replace Facebook" is putting things the wrong way around.

A more interesting way to ask the question is, "what did Facebook replace."

People used to build their own websites. People used to have blogs. People used USENET which was truly distributed and un-censorable.

Facebook and Google took the open internet and open standards and monetized and made everything crappy. Enough of that. Nothing should replace Facebook, it's done, stick a fork in it.

I want to host a photo blog to provide a place where people from Facebook can see my photos after I delete my account, but I'm unsure what the best and most affordable solution is.

Initially I was thinking to host a Jekyll blog on GitHub pages and then find separate hosting for the images, but it seems that if I'm buying hosting anyways maybe I should just host a WordPress blog?

Looking for #advice...
