I've found the origin of the term “graphicacy”, which I've been using in recent presentations: It was apparently coined by geographer W.G.V. Balchin in a 1972 address to the annual conference of the Geographical Association http://www.jstor.org.access.library.miami.edu/stable/40567805?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents https://vis.social/media/ksaOqPSmg7O8533vhb4
