Hi, folks. I no longer have the capacity to run vis.social. Thank you for all of your donations over the past year to cover the costs. We're now spending ~$55/mo. on hosting, plus some administrative costs (like the domain name).

Anyone interested in shepherding vis.social?

@scott Would be really great if DVS could do that. vis.social is a nice alternative for folks who aren't as slack-centered.

@kristinHenry @scott agreed. I was going to ask if you’d brought it up with Elijah et al.

Also, is it just a financial thing, or a time thing?

@darth_mall @kristinHenry Just a time thing. I mentioned the cost because I don't like asking people for money, but I also don't want to pay for this all myself. :) So part of taking over or helping out would probably involve doing a little more planning than I've done around the financial side. (Hint: I've done no planning, really.) Whenever I ask for more, the same people very generously donate, but I don't think we should rely on the same donors over and over. Then again I'm no fundraised. :)

@scott @darth_mall I'd be happy to help out as much as I can. Maybe a few of us could try a skype call and brainstorm? Or on any other live-talk-platform.

@scott and I completely understand about funding seeking. But many of us are happy to chip in when we can.

@scott @kristinHenry that’s what I was afraid of. I can certainly contribute more (in fact it’s past time for me to donate again), but time is not something I really have more of to give 🙁

@darth_mall @kristinHenry just buy more time! ;)

Maybe we can crowdsource the work. But I fear the spammers would all volunteer. :)

@scott @kristinHenry is there any update on changing management of the instance? I’ve been thinking a lot about it the past 2 weeks, if no one else can do it, I’ll give it a go, especially if we can get a few more volunteers to help with moderation.

@kristinHenry @darth_mall thank you both! Evan, no, nothing had changed yet. A few people said they would inquire over at the DVSS, but no news so far (and no volunteers).

I'd love suggestions. Would be open to another benevolent dictator taking the reins, or a team effort (probably better): some moderation, some fundraising, some welcoming committee...

@scott @kristinHenry I think a team effort for moderation would be great. It would be good to have an explicit code of conduct as guidance (I remember discussing this back when the instance first started, but can't remember if we ever ended up with one).

It might be good to do the sysadmin/hosting responsibilities the same way for safety, but if you need to get out from under that, I think I can take it over completely.

RE funds, we should talk about current costs
